Fearing the spread of communism, the United States recruited the Hmong in Laos to fight against the communist Pathet-Lao in 1965. The “Secret War” was a covert operation by the CIA, officially denied by the US government who had pledged, along with the North Vietnamese government, to affirm the neutrality of Laos.
